DIY (ish!) Hockey Pillow for Under $20

I don’t like hockey. Yet here I am making hockey themed pillows for a hockey themed room in our house. Why? Because when you have kids, they make you do things against your will and good judgment.

So if anyone else is in the same predicament as I am, scratching your head over how to make the theme room of your kid’s dreams that you can live with too, here’s a super easy way to incorporate the theme onto pillows. This is much cheaper and less permanent than having Gretzky’s mural painted on the wall!

This is DIY (ish!) because I’m a fraud and never learned how to sew zippers onto pillow covers so instead of making my own, I bought some from IKEA with prices ranging from $3.99 - $9.99. Top row from left to right: Sanela, Gurli and Vigdis.

I ordered custom printed hockey fabric from Spoonflower which is a magical place where you can search for any pattern…and I mean ANYTHING (like I just searched “boobs” and got results!). Bottom row from left to right: Hockey on Dark Blue, Hockey Skates on Ice, Hockey Sticks on Stripes and Blue Hockey. A fat quarter (21”X18”) for $10.50 was all I needed for each pattern.

The only sewing skills needed for these pillows: sew a square onto another square. This is my kind of sewing!
